On 25 Oct 2011, the Youth Skipper Flotilla was granted society statue with the Registry of Society. Our registration number is T11SS0196F. This is a great step forward for YSF from its humble beginnings as a school enrichment program. Although we are now an independent society, we continue to associate and link ourselves to The Singapore Nautical Institute, our parent institute. We held our first AGM at Singapore Polytechnic on the 3rd November. The newly formed committee along with founder members shared their thoughts along with YSF’s mission and vision.
YSF took ownership from Maple Tree Investments, the remaining boats and artefacts which was from the former Sentosa Maritime Museum that was closed in 2001. Currently these exhibits are contained in our YSF-SNI PRIDE Centre (Comtech) where we have begun the the process of restoring, preserving, identifying and documenting them. This is temporary as we seek a permanent location to set up Singapore’s own maritime heritage museum within two years. Among the inventory is a signal mast that dates back to 1880s. All these exhibits are our national heritage that tells a story of Singapore. The work we are doing is integral to YSF main objective of honouring and preserving Singapore’s maritime heritage through education and showcasing it physically and virtually. Being a maritime port city, it is important that we carry this torch of developing the public’s interest and awareness of Singapore rich maritime past so that we can move forward to embrace the future.
On 17 Feb 2011, YSF Bendemeer visited Russian Pallada. This is our second visit to the World Tallest Ship. Our cadets got a chance to interact with Russian cadets and to see their living quarters. Cadet Jing Yi said: “I felt very excited to go on a Russian
Ship as it was my first time.”
On 25 Oct, YSF Bendemeer went to Nghee Ann Polytechnic for the Marine and Offshore challenge. Cadets are tested on their knowledge on mathematics, science and design and technology related to the maritime field. We managed to secure this year’s Championship title beating all schools. In addition to the trophies won, the cadets also won themselves the Prize money $600 dollars cash! What a fitting conclusion to the busy year.
On 21 July 2011, YSF Bendemeer raced on the Spirit
of Francis against experienced racers. Despite our novice status and relatively slow boat we came in 3rd among 4 boats and won ourselves a mention and a cup which is not an easy feat. What a fitting conclusion. For 3rd Nikhil the most memorable moment of the race was when our yacht passed the Southern most tip of Singapore, the Raffles Light House.
